Even in my army days, I have never thought I would be running this distance. My weekend now becomes very fulfilling with activities like cycling and running, with my gals of course.

I finally free a slot from my busy schedule last Sunday afternoon for this. We set off at about 1500 hrs from Telok Blangah Hill Park. It is not difficult to orientate ourselves in the park as there are sign boards all over the place, besides, the place was packed with visitors, so, getting loss is out of the question.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/SEeFXcqGV5I/AAAAAAAAAkE/BGIHppaAIxI/s200/SR4.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5208278131953522578" /> <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/SEeFXmaPL5I/AAAAAAAAAkM/-Kv6HhjXKvE/s200/SR3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5208278134571347858" />

Henderson Waves was our first stop, we walk up a long stretch of slope pavement which my kids have fun running down later. My plan was to get out of the house by 6am and reach there before 7am in order to secure a parking lot. The biggest challenge come first thing in the morning, there is loading four bicycle onto my car, two 26”, one 24” and one 20”. It was to me tougher than riding 6km on the runway actually.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/SD-ZvVhT1ZI/AAAAAAAAAi8/C8o3YpUMm0U/s320/RWC1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5206048732773340562" />

There are 3 categories in the event, 6km family route, 15km leisure route and 45km endurance challenge. Needless to say, all four of us took up the 6km family ride. The two girls were very excited in front of the runway, but the 6km was quite an endurances test for them on their 24” and 20”, we could see from their expression at the end of the ride.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/SD-Z71hT1aI/AAAAAAAAAjE/14MGkehFx5g/s320/RWC2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5206048947521705378" />

The event was well organised, booths were set up by SAFRA, and a few well known bike shop and supplier. There are also performances that keep us entertained while we rest after our ride. I brought my bike just two days before Chinese New Year, it’s a Scott Reflex 30.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/SDJret4YDOI/AAAAAAAAAis/yqg6WemHmkI/s320/MyBike.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5202338695022644450" />When I decided to take up mountain biking, it appears to me that I will be doing slow trail riding with my family in the nature like what many did in the parks. So I went on to ride about fifteen kilometers of roads a few nights before to get me into the mood, and I thought I will be ok on the trail. But I was wrong. My first trip into the trail was shocking, my dream for the family ride got further, the stamina and skill needed to ride ten minute into the trail far exceed my fitness level. I felt like I am back to BMT training at the end of the trail, it was very "SIONG".

Nevertheless, I was determined to carry on with my new hobby, there is no turning back after throwing in close to a grand to acquire the necessary gadget. In fact, I even went on to get three more mountain bikes for my wife and the two elder daughters.

Last week, my effort is starting to pay off, I took my wife and eldest daughter to Gangsa Hill on two separate days, and they were coping well for a start. And although my big girl complains about the need to wash the bike after the trip, she is looking forward to the next trip.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/SDJsct4YDPI/AAAAAAAAAi0/VY4yc077lBw/s320/DSC00476.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5202339760174533874" />

Writing And Running

It is been a long time since I last contribute to my blog, so much has happen in the last few months, I have even got a new job. Many time I wanted to start typing but it just don’t work out. I realize it is very much like running, when I stop running for a week or more, it become less enjoyable to start stepping out again. Nearly two year ago, I was busy looking for reasons to be excused from running i.e. IPPT. I was too tired after work, I need more time with my kids, and I have got asthma. Interestingly, after running for six month, I countered all the excuses myself, running actually improve my energy level, I got my wife and kids to run with me, and better fitness brings better health which help suppress my asthmatic condition. Anyway, I ran 8km in about one hour last night, I am happy I have made such progress. Next month, I will be doing a 10km run in the Saucony 100PLUS PAssion run 2008.

My Running Shoe

I went for a run on Tuesday night. I have pre-plan the route with MapMyRun, a distance of about 2.8 km, which I only walk for 50m during the run to regulate my breathing. I am quite happy with my progress due to the fact that I started my first run a month ago with only 800 meters of running. Interestingly this is also the longest route I have run voluntarily.

Technologies these days are really of great help to many people in many ways. On measurement of running distance alone, other than using the internet to plan the running route, one can also use watches, mini gadgets or shoes with GPS or pacing software, these devices also have extra functions to measuring other figures like the speed and calories burned, and software to gauge your performance. There are also shoes to fit all kinds of legs, including flat-footers, clothing that are light and remove sweat from your body, MP3s to help you to stay focus and enjoy your run. Medical information on injuries, diet, types of foots, ways of running can be found on the web easily. The list goes on.

What use to be very simple only a decade ago is now a science subject. In my army days, we just put on our vest and shorts, and any fitting pair of the multi-purpose shoe and there we goes. Today, choosing my pair of running shoe alone took me more than one hour, this is the first time it is happening to me, and I used to think that only girls do that, silly me. The sale person first measure my foot, length and width, then they let me walk and run on the treadmill when they determine the type of foot I have, and my walking and running style. Lastly, they narrow down a few models of shoes for me to try on. Along the process, the sale person would explain what and why they checking or doing. And at last, I pay $140 for this Asics GEL-CUMULUS® 9.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rzwk5c4dmAI/AAAAAAAAAik/ycZhNDQ8SOg/s320/Gel-Cumulus+9.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5133018244719679490" />

Healthy Living

While reading SgRunners few days back, I registered for a talk, as its title says “Fit for Running” the talk was meant to create awareness and prepare runners for the upcoming marathon event. I am not a marathon runner, but I still went on to attend the talk since I am almost 40 and have not been running for a long long time. Most of the subjects are quite dry, but I did the right thing to attend the talk. I learn to understand injuries, the preventions and managing them if it happens, I learn some techniques of strength training, and there are also what and how to eat and drink correctly for runners, lastly about the risk a runner face when running a marathon, why some runner died running. It was 3 hours well spend, at least I learn to run the right way, rather than sacrificing health for fitness.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rze9p7uiM0I/AAAAAAAAAh8/EeceKb8-9uY/s320/Fit+for+Running.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5131778828517126978" />

Back home in the evening my wife suggested a family run, and so every member including my youngest daughter was at my usual running spot, and amazingly, she did 800 meters. It happens in the last swimming session I had with my elder daughter. As she is still a beginner, I encourage her to challenge herself by swimming the length of the pool. While pacing her, I found that my stamina had deteriorated to an alarming level.

I was a good swimmer in my polytechnic days, I pass my Bronze Medallion test and was a part-time lifeguard of the swimming pool in the polytechnic. Those days were tough, I trained for 8 hour weekly, minimum of 2 km for warming up and 1 km for warming down, but I was at the pink of my health. Though the traning was meant for more advance certification, the Silver Cross, (the test system for lifesaving course have change since then) I did not go for it because of my final year examination.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RyszjAIehYI/AAAAAAAAAdw/SzhkKj0XCUA/s320/shoe.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5128249277115434370" />

Now, I have got my wife and my daughters to start running with me. And to give myself some encouragement and determination to continue and excel further, I brought myself a pair of last season’s Asics Kayano from Royal Sporting House for $160, I know it is funny but this is the first time I spent this much for a pair of running shoe. In fact, I did some research and ask around for advice before throwing in my money. I was quite surprise with the recommendations from my friends, brands like Nike, Adidas, Reebok, Fila were not in the list, instead the popular suggestion were New Balance and Asics. Interestingly, I feel that the money was well spend after just one run, beside being comfortable, the aches on my knee and ankles have subside substantially.

I am now running 3 times a week and have more confident with my improving fitness. Being a non-runner half my life, I hope that soon, I would be able to run a half-marathon, maybe even a full marathon with my wife and children.

The Third Terminal

I was invited to an open house with my family on Sunday. It was a unique one, an open house of the Terminal 3, at the Singapore Changi International Airport.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Ry9FSwIeh4I/AAAAAAAAAhs/Vieg_wsCFjU/s320/T3-08.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129394689058703234" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Ry9FXAIeh5I/AAAAAAAAAh0/QsktR821rD0/s320/T3+Broc.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129394762073147282" />

The basic facilities were completed, but the whole place was undergoing renovation of the tenant’s shop lots. Being an engineering guy, the first thing I notice was of course the building services in the terminal. The roof of the building was covered with skylights which allow sunlight to penetrate and light up the place, there are very minimum light fittings in the main hall. Then there were air-conditioning outlet that is build very low above the ground, this contribute to energy saving since the system only need to cool the lower space where the human traffic is, rather than the whole hall which is easily 10 meters high. I also see more architectural features and lots of indoor plants at every corner as compare to terminal 1 & 2.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Ry9E3wIehzI/AAAAAAAAAhI/jS_pcmXDKeI/s200/T3-07.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129394225202235186" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Ry9E4QIeh0I/AAAAAAAAAhQ/eE28CjbtvqQ/s200/T3-06.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129394233792169794" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Ry9E4gIeh1I/AAAAAAAAAhY/JUAAM5vyNw8/s200/T3-01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129394238087137106" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Ry9E5QIeh3I/AAAAAAAAAhk/DkHCcKONGXw/s200/T3-02.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129394250972039026" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Ry9ETAIehxI/AAAAAAAAAg4/4lzsveyWxck/s200/T3-03.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129393593842042642" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Ry9EUQIehyI/AAAAAAAAAhA/E_PA-3XEle8/s200/T3-04.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129393615316879138" />

While my wife find the trip bore, I treat as just another family outing, the children and me enjoy ourselves take photo and playing catching in the big hall.

A Little Mishap

I got into an accident last night, actually someone got me into an accident. The SOMEONE banged into my rear bumper.

I end up spending my whole morning to settle my car repair in his recommended workshop at Sin Ming Road. Today is a hot day, I waited for the boss of the repair shop for half an hour, then I waited for him to confirm that the SOMEONE is going to claim his insurance for one and a half hour, and then I waited for another hour for the replacement car to arrive. It was like a nightmare right after you wake up in the morning. So to keep myself busy, I started taking these photos in the vicinity, really wander who’s the owner.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RyC62PCFTRI/AAAAAAAAAc0/5GilI5iPK2w/s200/SM+Children1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5125301816858594578" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RyC62fCFTSI/AAAAAAAAAc8/SEP--40-hDI/s200/SM+Children2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5125301821153561890" />

Anyway, I finally got my replacement car, a Toyota Camry. I intended to write about my Sunday trip to Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden with my kids, but my memory had failed me, that was why I am only writing it today. I learn about the garden only about a week back, and since my wife have a weekend assignment (road show), the trip would keep them occupied for the weekend and also give them a break before they settle down for their preparation of year-end examination.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rxb1d4D1KyI/AAAAAAAAAbc/ep2Ad3Xc1mg/s200/m2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5122551519793982242" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rxb1QID1KvI/AAAAAAAAAbE/xp-Y1tajHmg/s200/m3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5122551283570780914" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rxb1RYD1KwI/AAAAAAAAAbM/yANM4sgMfkk/s200/m4.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5122551305045617410" />

As I was not familiar with this area, I parked at the car park near the Singapore Botanic Garden visitor center. Following the maps and the road signs, we walk about 20 minute to the garden within the park vicinity.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rxb084D1KtI/AAAAAAAAAa0/RwKTh36HekA/s200/m5.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5122550952858299090" />

The greenery is something children cannot appreciate, while I enjoy my slow walk toward the garden, my kids would hassle me about the long walk and keep asking me, “我们到了吗?” So along the way I would talk to them about the plants, and took photos for them to kill their boredom.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rxb1BoD1KuI/AAAAAAAAAa8/RZCvcZtkN6c/s200/m6.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5122551034462677730" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rxb0qID1KrI/AAAAAAAAAak/yAbM-ltvjsc/s200/m7.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5122550630735751858" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rxb0qYD1KsI/AAAAAAAAAas/G1dFiU6I5KU/s200/m8.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5122550635030719170" />

The place is quite well planned for the children visitors. There is a controlled entrance which is guarded, the guard is meant to ensure that children in the garden are accompanied by adult since the entry is free. There are children’s toilets and drinking points, and the canteen is right outside the garden with little chairs and tables.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rxbz_4D1KnI/AAAAAAAAAaI/XY9qDDTrB_g/s200/m9.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5122549904886278770" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rxb0AYD1KoI/AAAAAAAAAaQ/gqFcibxFbvE/s200/m10.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5122549913476213378" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rxbzt4D1KlI/AAAAAAAAAZ4/4UZ9TUd4WJE/s200/m11.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5122549595648633426" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RxbzuYD1KmI/AAAAAAAAAaA/pq9e_hjGTLA/s200/m12.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5122549604238568034" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rxbu2YD1KjI/AAAAAAAAAZo/iyiCxdgXnkU/s200/m13.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5122544244119382578" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rxbu2oD1KkI/AAAAAAAAAZw/SFTcqyGROds/s200/m14.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5122544248414349890" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rxbug4D1KhI/AAAAAAAAAZY/1Lntj_SMTWA/s200/m15.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5122543874752195090" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RxbuhoD1KiI/AAAAAAAAAZg/tUufjaND-SY/s200/m16.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5122543887637096994" />

The garden is separated into many stations like water-play area, cave, suspension bridge, tree house, maze, etc. With its size and the variety of play area, it could easily keep the children busy for at least half a day, especially the water-play area. As I did not prepare extra clothing for the children, plus the weather was very sunny, we left the place after only 2 hours. Now, things got tough for me and the children, they were too exhausted to take the walk back to my car but there are not alternative, so the daddy (that’s me) has to lure, encourage, push and pull them along.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RxbuHID1KfI/AAAAAAAAAZI/8sRRDP3u-JQ/s200/m17.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5122543432370563570" />

This is a picture of my youngest daughter learning how to drink from the water point on her own.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RxbuHoD1KgI/AAAAAAAAAZQ/O16iU4n1nfc/s200/m18.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5122543440960498178" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rxbt1oD1KdI/AAAAAAAAAY4/2ujd9at3b_w/s200/m19.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5122543131722852818" />

On the way back, we pass by the big pond where we had an encounter with the black swan.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rxbt14D1KeI/AAAAAAAAAZA/vs-8RYVTCKo/s200/m20.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5122543136017820130" />

When we reach the visitor center at last, we took a rest before we goes off. My elder daughter was enjoying chocolate fondue so much she didn’t feel the chocolate flowing out from her month.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RwmzxYD1KSI/AAAAAAAAAXg/-K8KRPklnkc/s200/b3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5118820112336759074" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RwmzxYD1KTI/AAAAAAAAAXo/BAhtzAkEwn8/s200/b4.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5118820112336759090" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RwmzxYD1KUI/AAAAAAAAAXw/ZkFdcRo9J9g/s200/b5.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5118820112336759106" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RwmzZID1KPI/AAAAAAAAAXI/5-9OafjuNJY/s200/b8.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5118819695724931314" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RwmzZYD1KQI/AAAAAAAAAXQ/7vyifihbQP0/s200/b7.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5118819700019898626" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RwmzZYD1KRI/AAAAAAAAAXY/rxfdVV1ZTK0/s200/b6.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5118819700019898642" />

Sinful Enjoyment

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RwCxLID1KII/AAAAAAAAAWQ/5sb46h15x1A/s400/01.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116283981393111170" />

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RwCxCID1KHI/AAAAAAAAAWI/5Q0A2fRVBUM/s320/02.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116283826774288498" />My wife and I went for a walk at IMM few days back. We were feeling hungry when we happen to pass by this “Tea Room” selling Hong Kong food, which have a display menu showing something interesting, the price is reasonable too. The place looks quite popular as there were only few empty seats left. We decide our pick and my wife quickly take up a seat while I went on to queue ordered a ginger steamed egg, oyster beef with egg and HK crispy chicken with mushroom.

I collected my drinks and steam egg from the counter, then make my way to my table and wait for the main dishes to arrive. The steam egg was very smooth and soft, I can smell the fragrance of ginger as I put it in my month. Interestingly, this delicious dessert does not appear in the menu.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RwCweoD1KGI/AAAAAAAAAWA/W8wuL1hm4tc/s200/03.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116283216888932450" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RwCweYD1KFI/AAAAAAAAAV4/0I6Qg2T7bto/s200/04.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116283212593965138" />

I took the beef rice while my wife had the chicken rice. Not only the rice was done in a different way but they also use different ingredients from what we have in our local food court. For example, the chicken rice was covered with molten cheese, and my wife described the rice as sinful. I didn’t understand the description till I tried the rice, it taste good in my month but at the same time, I started feeling very sinful as the molten cheese make its way through my throat.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RwCwNYD1KCI/AAAAAAAAAVg/IJLxlbv3T18/s200/05.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116282920536188962" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RwCwNoD1KDI/AAAAAAAAAVo/mgBUvq9vK14/s200/06.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116282924831156274" />

The dishes also come with a soup as a set, which have included tremella(白木耳), red date(红枣), and papaya(木瓜). I can feel it by their responsiveness when I talk to them. But I didn’t know what to do, it is men’s weakness, we are made to be less sensitive and reactive to such situation. Luckily my wife have the solution (she’s the patch to my weakness), she suggested a walk at the fun fair.

I can still remember the joy I have when my dad brought me to one, when I was much younger. That’s always one rule to follow, we are not allow to play any “dee kam” (game). His explanation was pretty simple, the game is the first step to the gambling world, so it is to prevent us from cultivating the risk taking habit in our life.

Now that I am a father, I too avoided most of the game unless with close guidance. But these days, the focuses of the fun fair are mostly on necessities and foods. This is the first time I actually tried the fried ice-cream (炸雪糕), price is on the high side in my opinion, but nevertheless, I got two for the two elder girls. The taste is rather interesting, the girls enjoy it anyway.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rv3lSID1KAI/AAAAAAAAAVQ/01_3At1xt9w/s200/2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5115496851326707714" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rv3lSYD1KBI/AAAAAAAAAVY/r4zMvQ0EsLE/s200/1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5115496855621675026" />

One store I wish to mentioned, I previously tried this one store selling Teochew meat puff (潮州香饼). As far as I know, it is the only one in singapore, maybe JB and Batam too. I like particularly the one with oyster, definitely worth chewing on.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rv3k-YD1J-I/AAAAAAAAAVA/cHh8Rlna0LY/s200/3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5115496512024291298" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rv3k-YD1J_I/AAAAAAAAAVI/nXjBjEXfxc0/s200/4.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5115496512024291314" />

Then, there were the fun rides, and my wife lures them into take up a new challenge, the Viking (海盗船). My two elder girls enjoy the ride but the youngest one was too afraid and has to drop out half way. But I am delighted that they have the ride, because I had my first Viking ride after the age of twenty. The evening has at least eased the tension I have build up in the pass few days, and I slept well that night.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rv3ki4D1J8I/AAAAAAAAAUw/e1nXgYqO4Hs/s200/5.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5115496039577888706" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rv3kjID1J9I/AAAAAAAAAU4/F6WRmIDaeCk/s200/6.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5115496043872856018" />

Harvest Moon

The Mid-Autumn festival falls on the fifteen day of the eighth lunar month, which according to the lunar calendar is also the exact middle of autumn. At this time, the moon's orbit is at its lowest angle to the horizon, making the moon appear brighter and larger than any other time of the year. In the Western tradition, it is also called the Hunter's Moon or Harvest Moon.

But today is also my in-law’s birthday. It is going to be a busy night though. I will have to attend the dinner, and then hopefully I will still have a bit of time to bring my kids for a walk. My wife have brought three lanterns for the kids a week ago, the two elder daughters got the traditional ones that uses candle to light up. I can remember that when I was much younger, this is a good time to play with fire, under the consent of my parent, I never fail to expend each of my lanterns.

According to a widespread folk tale, the Mid-Autumn Festival commemorates an uprising in China against the Mongol rulers of the Yuan Dynasty. As group gatherings were banned, it was impossible to make plans for a rebellion. Noting that the Mongols did not eat mooncakes, the advisor to the Chinese rebel leader Zhu Yuanzhang, came up with the idea of timing the rebellion to coincide with the Mid-Autumn Festival. He sought permission to distribute thousands of moon cakes to the Chinese residents in the city to bless the longevity of the Mongol emperor. Inside each cake, however, was inserted a piece of paper with the message: "Kill the Tatars on the 15th day of the Eighth Moon." (八月十五殺韃子) On the night of the Moon Festival, the rebels successfully attacked and overthrew the government. What followed was the establishment of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), under Zhu. Henceforth, the Mid-Autumn Festival was celebrated with moon cakes on a national level.

中秋佳节

Mid-Autumn Festival is only less than a week away, my earlier order for two boxes of mooncake have been delivered, there were meant to be a gift for my mother and In-laws.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RvC3oGLLbaI/AAAAAAAAAQg/Ne4WHeYYxMU/s320/0919DCG1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5111787476545662370" />

When I send a box to my mum’s place, she immediately cut out one for us to try. The wake lasted for seven days in Batam. I was there only on sixth day due to my work commitment. It is been years since I last went, I realize only when I saw the age prints on the faces of my aunties and uncles. I couldn’t recognize them all, but they were happy to see me. They just hold my hand and smile and I can feel the closeness of our heart, the bond of our blood.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rud09Mr44iI/AAAAAAAAALw/pC86z3Z-qv4/s200/0910lan.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5109180897001267746" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RuduIcr44gI/AAAAAAAAALg/UofqWOXYmVc/s200/0910fune1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5109173393693401602" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rud088r44hI/AAAAAAAAALo/KfeZb9gngGU/s200/0910fune2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5109180892706300434" />

I could see from far the lantern were red signifying longevity. The Chinese believes that if one hit the age of seventy, or has five generations under them, then one is consider to have enjoyed longevity and the death is not a sad event. The setup was more or less similar what we have in Singapore. Unlike here, there are some restrictions to be followed very strictly, one of which is all forms of gambling activities are not allowed, this included manjong or card games which the authorities in Singapore would not enforce most of the time, so we could only spend the night chatting or sleeping.

After midnight, it was consider the seventh day, everyone have to kneel around coffin to wake the decease up for a shower, change to her new cloths and take her meal, we then burned the paper house, car and money for her to bring along before she move on to her afterlife.

The next day which was the last day, I found out that Band is also in the restriction list. We went through the Buddhism ceremony, before the coffin is transfer to a van, a police petrol car would clear all traffic lights along the way and escort the convoy non stop from the funeral parlour to the crematorium.

I was told that the crematorium uses kerosene and not gas. After a short prayer, the coffin was send into the funnel. The memorial tablet was then brought back and setup in one of the uncle’s house. The ceremony is then considered as ended after we change into our daily clothes. In Buddhism, the living is supposed to let go the sorrow and move on as death is just part of life.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RueGcsr44jI/AAAAAAAAAL4/t4Z1WiXgduw/s200/0910cre0.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5109200129864819250" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RueHrMr44kI/AAAAAAAAAMA/0s2y1XRhMME/s200/0910cre1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5109201478484550210" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RueIZcr44lI/AAAAAAAAAMI/BzEJFXwHfJ4/s200/0910cre2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5109202273053499986" />

My aunty drove us to the jetty after a short rest, where we book the 5.30pm ferry to Singapore. It was full of people that were there for the “Batam one day tour”, we could see many tour guide holding the little flag, shouting all over the place. Thanks to the human traffic on this last day of the school holiday, our ferry was late for one hour. You can complain about your steak not been medium rare, you can eat half your serving and ask the waiter to pack it for you to take away, without getting that funny look, without question from them.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RuDvQJzxK0I/AAAAAAAAALA/M5ThBUr1l2c/s200/AusSteak.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5107345038228138818" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RuDvQ5zxK1I/AAAAAAAAALI/ZnkWvxP8eLo/s200/BotBerg.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5107345051113040722" />

They have been around for a while, with a good reputation on their food and services. It is quite amusing to see a hawker stall with business volume capable of sustaining more than ten staffs. My dad was a hawker, I know how difficult it is to achieve that. Anyway, though they may not be serving the best food around, but I must say that it is more than value for money, and so far, I really enjoy the food.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://bacts-too.blogspot.com/2007/09/hey-botak-are-you-jones.html' title='Hey, Botak! The food was average, and I have no complain about the service. However, there are a few dishes that are worth the price tag. The restaurant was not very clouded for the evening, making the serving much faster than some Zhi Cha Stall in the hawker centre, and more comfortable too.

Indian Roti

I was dragging my feet home last evening, exhausted due to previous late night, then my wife release a bad news to me. Oh, it is not really a bad news, she has promised my girls a satay treat for supper. Well, a promise is a promise, anyway, I hate to disappointment my girls unless necessary.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rt-EgtAJv8I/AAAAAAAAAJA/_gMyRTKvSQ8/s320/DSC00285.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5106946199832346562" />

Satay Club would be a good choice, it is a pity I don’t know where it moved to when Sembawang Shopping Centre is demolished. So the next on my list, only about fifty meters away from the Shopping Centre along Sembawang Road, D’Rubinah Restaurant, it is actually a coffee shop beside Mobil Station. Parking space in this area is limited, but driver have their way around.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rt-FhdAJv_I/AAAAAAAAAJY/UcRuv9wmSDk/s200/DSC00283.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5106947312228876274" />

I order only 20 sticks of Satay with one Naan, just enough to ease the crave for a family of five. The Satay stall hides at the back of the shop, which is the end of the alley, but the taste is good and the meat is tender as compared to many others. The Naan here is cooked in a Tandoor, and it comes in a few flavors, garlic, cheese, honey, etc. They also sell roti prata too. For taste above average with good variety of Indian and Malay food, this is the place.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rt-FAtAJv9I/AAAAAAAAAJI/Y8vDMCeDzI0/s200/DSC00282.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5106946749588160466" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/Rt-FA9AJv-I/AAAAAAAAAJQ/td7fdALRPqs/s200/DSC00284.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5106946753883127778" />

Super Long Weekend

Last weekend was a super long one, not the long weekend that last for three or five days, but one that exhausted me more than other days. I completed a home project which I wanted to do three years ago, held back due to my busy schedule. I wanted to erect some racks in my storeroom and get my barang barang organized. I could not hold back the project any longer because I am starting to have problem closing the door.

I choose GORM system from IKEA, and went down last Monday to get the parts. In fact, I did the measurement and planned the rack configuration two months back, but IKEA did not have all the parts I needed. There are a few reasons why I like to buy their furniture. First, I get to shop at a big and nice place, a place you could find practically all your finishing needs and ideas. The prices are quite reasonable unless you are into quality of material. It gives me a sense of satisfaction when you look at the finished products. And finally, I get to do some hands on work as a form of exercise which I need.

It took me nearly eight hours to clear my storeroom, tear down the fixed shelving, clearing the debits, alter and assemble the racks. By the time I was ready for a shower before bed, it is already 2.30am. The next morning, I was surprised that we discard the unwanted stuffs and repack the storeroom in only four hours flat. Anyway, it was not time to rest, like I say earlier, it is a “long” weekend. I still need to bring my family out for grocery shopping and then dinner at Ah Mah house.

The Little Princess

This video clip was taken when she was one, and until today, my wife and I still enjoy watching it. Since young, she has been our most cheerful girl, she's the apple of our family. Then, time flies and ... ...

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RtJIxtAJvQI/AAAAAAAAADU/eSmXjbo6PJE/s200/Bla1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5103221346495216898" />

Today, she has grown up, still as cheerful, still the apple of our family, but a little spicy. She is attending school now and learning tons of new skills. And she would show off to us at home when she is in the right mood. She seems to be much easier to handle than my two older daughters, and sometime I would wonder if it is because of her easy-going character or due to the experience we had learn from her elder sisters. Anyway, the joy and satisfaction you get when your child hit her milestone is something words could not describe. All my three daughters are attending school, is it their achievement, or mine? Whichever way it is, I am proud of them.

猪, 我来了!

Lunch on Saturday is never an easy decision for me, there are simple too much good food around this vicinity. But since my colleagues have been talking about Bak Kut Teh for the last few days, we somehow did not give much thought about other food. This is one store I have not visit for a while, nothing wrong with the taste but rather the availability of choice we have, Eng Kee Bak Kut Teh (永记肉骨茶). The store is situated at Ang Mo Kio Street 32, Block 341, parking is a breeze in this area.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RtrK6dAJvsI/AAAAAAAAAHA/Ge7CAmimgEA/s320/DSC00271.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5105616233144368834" />

We practically order every single dish on the manual except the tea, these include the pork rib (肉骨), trotter (猪脚), intestines (粉肠), liver (猪肝), deep-fried breadstick (油条) and Stewed vegetables (菜尾). The trotter is one of the best I have tried so far, the tendons is soft enough to give you the "melt in the mouth" feeling and yet the meat is still tender at the same time, very good balance that very few hawker store could achieve. This time round, I also get to try the intestines, which was out of stock during my last three visits. My only disappointment would be the liver which is not rare enough. I have also notice that the price have went up too.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RtrK69AJvuI/AAAAAAAAAHQ/YYANBMpQyVI/s320/DSC00275.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5105616241734303458" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RtrK69AJvtI/AAAAAAAAAHI/Ix9u1e98zzA/s320/DSC00273.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5105616241734303442" />

Flying Our National Flag

I took a photo of our Chinook flying our national flag last year.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_vs7CiczRHw4/RtwS6NAJvyI/AAAAAAAAAHw/7bJmVNYI_mA/s320/NDP001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5105976868663312162" />
This year my daughter drew a helicopter instead during her art session in nursery. Today, almost twenty years after I left school, I found out where and how it got started.

"National Teacher's Day history is quite interesting. Read on to know about history and origin of Happy National Teachers Day.

In 1944, an Arkansas teacher, Mrs. Mattye Whyte Woodridge, corresponded with political and educational leaders for a national day honoring teachers. She also wrote to Eleanor Roosevelt, who persuaded the 81st Congress to proclaim a National Teacher Day in 1953.

In the late 1970s, the National Education Association (NEA), its Indiana and Kansas state affiliates, and its local affiliate in Dodge City, Kansas, lobbied Congress for the creation of a national day celebrating teachers. Congress declared March 7, 1980 as National Teacher's Day. But it was declared as National Teacher's Day for that year only.

NEA and its affiliates continued to observe Teacher Day on the first Tuesday in March until 1985, when NEA and the National PTA established Teacher Appreciation Week as the first full week of May. The NEA Representative Assembly then voted to make the Tuesday of that week National Teacher's Day. Since then, National Teacher's Day is celebrated on the Tuesday of the first full week of May.

This is all about the National Teachers' Day origin.

This article is extracted from here."

I have some friends who teach, it is not an easy profession, especially in Singapore today. I wish all teachers a Happy Teachers' Day today, but be happy all year round. Happy Teaching!

Durian Marathon

Our plan last week to invade a durian store this Friday meet a little hurdle, a few of us could not make it. With the gallery covering almost the whole of Marina Walk, the next best place to watch show would be below the bridge. We reach the spot at 2020hrs, there will probably less than 50 other waiting before us. I guess many have actually got tickets to enjoy the show at the gallery, or at the Esplanade. The show started with the performance of remote control kite at 2100hrs which last for 15 minute follow by the firework. I took a video clip of the firework.

On our way back, we drop by Marina Square 7-11 for a drink. And I was approached by a Vietnamese tourist asking for help to catch a cab to their hotel. Apparently, our Call-A-Cab services here is not very user friendly for these group of people, the queue were long and they could not make oversea call for a cab with their mobile phone. Anyway, we managed to get them 2 cabs within 30 minutes and send them back to their hotel, Hope they enjoy their stay in Singapore.

Fishing Trip 11 Aug 2007

This time round, I join my wife where her company organise a boat trip on Nelayana.
